| | bouncy | ] | It's a BEAUTIFUL day in New Jersey. The nice weather is very welcome after all of the gloomy gray days last week. I got my landlady pattern and material approved on Sunday, so I can finish that up this week. It's already cut out, and I've cut the boning. I just need to grind and dip the ends of the boning, and assemble it. Then I can start making the dress and hat for Sandy (Lady Elizabeth). I love making hats, and the material we bought on Sunday for her dress is LUX. It's a very pretty green on green Damask with a cream damask for the center panel. Eighteenth century. And I'm making a green felt tricorner hat with maribou trim and a huge ostrich feather plume. It's from the Butterick 3805 historical hats pattern. It's out of print, but I was able to find a copy on eBay. It's going to be fun!
While we were looking for fabric at the Fabric Warehouse, I found something fabulous. They had a table of linen cuts; each about 4 yards. I found a white linen that had a black embroidery border on one side. Yes, it IS machine done embroidery, and probably not really an absolutely period pattern. But it's close--looks like a row of paisleys, one right next to the other. Since I don't have the patience, time or eyesight to do blackwork, this will certainly do. So, I'm going to have a faux-blackwork chemise! WOO HOO! I'll cut out the sleeves with the "f-bw" on the ends, and then cut some of the border off the edge and make a strip of "embroidery" to turn into a square neckline into which I can gather the body of the smock. I got two four yard lengths, and the material is 52 inches wide, so I should have enough to make my daughter one also. And it was only $4.00 per yard! Even cheaper than NYC linen. Squee! Happy costumer! |
